IN TIME FOR SHABBOS: Shlissel Challah (Key Challah)

For years my friends have been baking Shlissel Challah (Key Challah) for the Sabbath right after Passover. I always wondered why but never did any research. This year, one of my favorite food bloggers, Melinda at Kitchen Tested, posted a picture of her Shlissel Challah on Instagram. They looked beautiful!  So I hopped on over to her website and checked out the recipe. It seemed easy enough so I gave it a shot. The Shlissel Challah came out beautifully.  Before baking them but post egg wash, I sprinkled on some cinnamon sugar.  Just for a little extra sweetness.

Why do we bake challah into the shape of a key?  The Shlissel Challah is supposed to bring a “segulah for pasnassah” or a blessing to ones home. Why right after Passover? Because on Passover we ask G-d to remember how he opened the gates for the entire nation of Israel after the Jews left Egypt. By baking the challah into the shape of a key we are asking G-d to unlock the gates for us as well. This really is a beautiful tradition and it is so nice to be a part of the larger Jewish community of women baking challah this Sabbath.
